Seventh & George Wins Next Step Grant from Susquehanna SCORE Susquehanna SCORE has announced Seventh & George as the winner of its $2,000 Next Step grant. The award was presented to Mary Ellen Martin, founder of Seventh & George, at the Susquehanna SCORE chapter members meeting on Monday, January 9 at HACC-York. Seventh & George is a kitchen, store and community committed to locally-sourced ingredients. It will use the grant to purchase a merchandising freezer for its North York store. The Next Step grant was funded by The Chamber Foundation and block Business Solutions, a stratix systems company. Thirteen eligible York County businesses submitted proposals. Susquehanna SCORE administered the grant process. A panel of eight judges reviewed and scored the proposals. The panel of judges reflected successful small businesses, banking, academia; and manufacturing, economic and career development. But in case your company has not started thinking about HR in 2017, or if you simply want to make sure you have covered the essentials, here are six steps for maintaining HR compliance in order to ensure your business starts off 2017 with a clean slate: 1. Review policies and procedures. With the many changes to state and federal employment laws throughout 2016, now is the perfect time to ensure that all your company’s policies and procedures comply with those changes to regulations and court decisions. Outdated policies that may no longer reflect the current law can cause more harm than good. It is vital that all company managers and supervisors are properly trained. Even basic training on how to handle sticky situations as they arise could help your company avoid a disaster. A manager who says things out of haste, who speaks before thinking, could bring a lawsuit or an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint to your doorstep. Here are some examples of what your supervisors should not be saying: You’re giving two weeks’ notice? Why don’t you just make today your last day. You’re fired. By saying this, the supervisor has just turned a voluntary resignation with little potential for a lawsuit into a termination with some possibility of legal action. If this employee was considering a suit — for example, about harassment — the termination may provoke them into pursuing it. In these circumstances, some companies prefer to ask an employee to leave immediately out of concern for the employee’s access to sensitive company data. That’s fine, but don’t call it a termination. If you suspect an employee has a substance abuse problem, but you don’t know for sure, only address the issue in the event the employee tells you that they have a substance abuse problem. Or, if the problem is unavoidably obvious, mention that the company has counseling services available through your employee assistance program (EAP) or talk about outpatient and inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation programs. Until you have the opportunity to talk to an employee you suspect has a substance abuse problem, keep your discussions with the employee focused on job performance. It’s important to keep track of the good and bad so that you have a record of deteriorating performance, whether due to drug abuse or any other problem. If an employee asks for leave to enter a residential or full-time treatment program, he or she is most likely entitled to unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Before the employee enters rehabilitation, the terms of their continued employment should be spelled out in an agreement signed by the employee. Because drug abuse is a widespread societal problem, it’s also a workplace problem. However, the options employers have to deal with the problem are constrained by the privacy rights of employees under federal and state laws. The federal laws that most affect the issue are the Drug-Free Workplace Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. There are many state laws — and even some local ordinances — that can affect how an employer may discover drug abuse and treat drug-abusing employees. The Drug-Free Workplace Act requires businesses holding government contracts of $25,000 or more — as well as institutions that receive federal grants or other forms of federal assistance — to establish drug education and awareness programs for their workers in an effort to maintain a drug-free workplace. It’s no secret: The health hazards associated with cigarette smoking have been making headlines for years. Smoking bans have been enacted, covering all bars and restaurants in each of the 60 most populated cities in the United States. Many large corporations and smaller businesses have followed suit by enacting policies aimed at reducing smoking, if not eliminating it altogether. Some businesses have established non-smoking zones while others, like Marriott, have placed an outright ban on smoking on company property. In 2005, Michigan-based Weyco Inc. initiated a controversial policy of not hiring smokers. If you work in human resources, policies like Weyco’s — created with employees’ health, safety and best interests in mind — may have an effect on your company’s bottom line. Is it legal to ban smokers? Many states have anti-discrimination laws that protect smokers. But due to the health hazards related to smoking, smokers are not comprehensively protected. What do the new FLSA regulations mean for my business?
The day has finally come! An announcement on the final amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) white collar exemption rules has been made. The amendments include: – Most employees making less than $47,476 annually are non-exempt and must receive overtime pay for working more than 40 hours per week. – This salary level will be updated every three years to fit the 40th percentile of full-time salaried workers in the lowest-wage Census region. The next update will be January 2020. – Highly compensated employee exemption qualification will now be based on the 90th percentile of full-time salaried workers nationally, increasing from $100,000 to $134,004. – For the first time, non-discretionary bonuses and incentive pay (including commissions) are now permitted to count towards up to 10 percent of this new standard salary level. HR notice season: What to look out for
Now is a good time for employers to review the annual notices that must be distributed to employees. Some notices are distributed at open enrollment, while others are distributed at set times during the year. Each individual employer may have different notice distribution requirements depending on several factors, including size of organization and types of plans offered. Some common notices are described below: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Notice of Privacy Practices: This notice must be provided at initial enrollment in the health care plan and every three years after that. Many employers include a HIPAA Notices of Privacy Practices with open enrollment materials each year so they don’t have to track the three-year distribution cycle. Health Care Exchange Notice: This notice must be distributed upon hire. Many employers will also include a copy with open enrollment materials. Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC): This notice must be distributed with open enrollment materials. The SBC must also be provided at initial enrollment and upon request. 4 steps for putting an employee disciplinary plan into action
In а perfect world, there would be no need to learn how to discipline employees correctly because everyone would always do their job with total ease. Let’s face it, life doesn’t work that way. Despite everyone’s best efforts, sooner or later, а supervisor will be faced with а situation where an employee commits acts of misconduct. Creating and publishing policies and procedures for employee disciplinary action ensures that everyone knows what counts as misconduct and what happens when it is committed. Here are some steps to follow when creating and using disciplinary plans: 1. Determine what counts as misconduct Create a list of offenses that automatically result in immediate suspension or even termination, including harassing others, behaving violently in the workplace, drinking or drug use during work hours, threatening or bullying co-workers, misrepresenting themselves, stealing or violating safety regulations. Such dangerous violations warrant immediate action. For less serious problems, such as missed deadlines, managers may provide an informal verbal warning to guide employees, followed by written reprimands. Managers could also create a Performance Improvement Plan. Company policy dictates how many chances an employee gets to respond to both verbal and written feedback to modify their behavior and on-the-job performance. 2. […]

4 ways to get employees to work more efficiently with a Performance Improvement Plan
At just about every company, even after careful hiring, training and motivation, а few employees emerge who simply don’t meet minimum standards. We’d like them to go away, but they usually don’t. The hang around making you and everyone else miserable. Warning: Even though you can tolerate some of this, doing so is demotivating and undermining your star performers. Eventually, your good employees will follow suit and slow down. Worse yet, they’ll quit. That poor performer is costing you much, much more reduced productivity. You can do something about this, and you can do it in a way that will build trust and respect among the employees you want to stay. Give those poor performers а PIP (Performance Improvement Plan). One of two things will happen: (1) The employee will get better and come up to standard, or (2) they’ll leave. Both are acceptable outcomes. Here’s how to do it: 1. Quantify the issues Employees who are not performing usually know it but many of them don’t know the specifics of what they’re doing wrong. It’s best for managers to describe the poor performance. How does pay-docking work under the Fair Labor Standards Act?
Are you confused about the pay-docking rules laid out by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)? You’re not alone. The regulations are about as clear as mud. As а general guideline, the FLSA prohibits deductions from exempt employees. Also, the regulations state that salaried staff can’t have their pay modified (i.e. deducted) based on the number of days or hours they’ve worked. Deductions also cannot be dependent on the quantity or quality of work the employee produces. However, there are several important exceptions to this rule. If your company accidentally makes an improper deduction, nothing bad will happen. If it’s an isolated incident, just correct the mistake, and move on. If it’s an ongoing thing, though, and you’re caught, entire departments of exempt workers can become OT-eligible via the rules outlined in the FLSA. That’s going to suddenly and immediately drive up labor costs. Many employers are confused about the FSLA labor and overtime regulations. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11.10.2015 York County Food Bank partners with York County Public Schools for “Give a Meal” Program YORK, Pa. – The York County Food Bank, a non-profit organization which provides over 2 million pounds of food in York County, has partnered with York County public schools to provide meals to families in need this holiday season as part of its new “Hungry to Help” campaign. The York County Food Bank’s Holiday “Give a Meal” Program has committed to provide over 3,500 turkeys and non-perishable items to families that qualify for the program within the participating school districts. Beginning November 1st, each of the participating York County schools will begin collecting non-perishable items to complete the holiday meal through food drives and donations from students and their families. In addition to donating non-perishables, students and their families can also contribute by volunteering to package the meals. Four young women received $500 each toward their educational endeavors in recognition of their superior leadership skills, admirable academic achievement and promising potential to become a future woman leader of our community. Sheri Karan, owner of Blind Spot Nutbutters, is this year’s winner of the National SCORE and The SCORE Foundation’s 2015 SCORE Award winner for Outstanding Community Impact Small Business. Sheri will be recognized at the SCORE Awards Gala, to be held on September 17, 2015 at the US Chamber of Commerce Halls of Flags in Washington, DC. In addition to other marketing assistance, Sheri will receive a marketing video professionally created by MiniMatters of Columbia, Maryland and paid for by the SCORE Foundation.
