Susquehanna SCORE Small Business Success Story:
Blind Spot Nutbutters, From Disability to Delivery
Sheri Karan makes artisan peanut butter and nut butter blends using whole and natural ingredients, selling at specialty food stores and farm markets throughout the Mid-Atlantic, as well as online, under her brand of Blind Spot Nutbutters. She began her business in 2013 after her husband’s visual disability created a need to provide for her family. Her previous experience was as a childcare provider.
When starting her business, in addition to her SCORE mentors, she used the services of a lawyer, insurance broker, graphic designer and a sub-contractor. Blind Spot Nutbutters is Sheri’s full-time occupation, supported by a part-time employee.
At the beginning, Sheri worked hard to find enough time to start her business while working and locating all the right people to help support her needs. SCORE was helpful in guiding her to know which decisions were important and when to make them. Decisions she faced included knowing when to move production from her home, where to locate the business, whether or not to use a distributor and how to outsource. “Learning,” she says, “is a never-ending process!”
Through the encouragement and nomination of her SCORE mentors Kellie Boysen and Dylan Bauer, Sheri won the 2015 Outstanding Community Impact Small Business Award from the SCORE Foundation.
With multiple mentoring locations and over 70 certified business mentors, Susquehanna SCORE serves Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and York Counties by helping individuals start and grow small businesses.
