York County Food Bank partners with York County Public Schools for “Give a Meal” Program
YORK, Pa. – The York County Food Bank, a non-profit organization which provides over 2 million pounds of food in York County, has partnered with York County public schools to provide meals to families in need this holiday season as part of its new “Hungry to Help” campaign.
The York County Food Bank’s Holiday “Give a Meal” Program has committed to provide over 3,500 turkeys and non-perishable items to families that qualify for the program within the participating school districts. Beginning November 1st, each of the participating York County schools will begin collecting non-perishable items to complete the holiday meal through food drives and donations from students and their families.
In addition to donating non-perishables, students and their families can also contribute by volunteering to package the meals. The donation period will run until the week of December 14, at which time volunteers will collect and package the meals and prepare them for the delivery or pick up for the families receiving them.
“York Suburban is very pleased to partner with the York County Food Bank to provide assistance to our students and families,” said Michele Merkle, Superintendent of York Suburban School District. “We are grateful for the generous donation and the chance this will give to our students to serve their community. I know my colleagues around the county are equally excited.”
“The York County Food Bank is honored to have partnered with the schools that are equally enthusiastic about reaching out to families in need this holiday season.” said York County Food Bank Executive Director Deb Eichelberger. “If the ‘Give a Meal’ program goes well, it is our vision that it will become an annual tradition within the York Community,” said Matt Shorb, Chairman of the York County Food Bank.
It is through the generous support and sponsorship of local businesses such as Penn Waste, KBS Dump Truck Service and Giant Food Stores that the Holiday ‘Give a Meal’ will take place this year. Scott Wagner, President of Penn Waste and KBS Dump Truck Service, has contributed a substantial portion to the program and looks forward to watching the program expand throughout the years.
“Penn Waste has been a regular supporter of The York County Food Bank. This project is not only huge, but it also benefits families in our community that are in need. When I was first presented with this project, it took me less than thirty seconds to say yes. On behalf of Penn Waste, KBS Dump Truck Service and our employees we applaud everyone at the York County Food Bank,” said Scott Wagner.
